Veneer Edgebanding

All our veneer products start with the pre-selection of domestic or imported premium grade veneers which are graded according to quality and width. The veneers are sliced from 1/50" to 1/25" (0.51mm to 1.02mm) thick. The quality of veneer selected allows us to achieve a consistent texture, color and pattern to the grain - in other words uniformity. Only straight grained, defect free flitch veneer is selected to ensure the best quality and performance in edging and profile wrap veneers.

Finger jointing

After choosing the veneer it must be end matched and the individual veneer lengths joined to produce a continuous veneer roll. This is accomplished by a "finger-jointing" process whereby staggered finger joints with differentiated cuts create an excellent almost undetectable joint. The joints are end matched to the best extent possible and are continuous for the run of the bundle of veneer used to produce the veneer roll. Breaks in the end match are permissible when the veneer bundle runs out and another bundle is started. The distance between joints may vary from roll to roll and possibly within the roll. However, the minimum distance between joints is 6' (1.83M) with 8' (2.43M) being the most common distance.

Backing

Backing of veneer products provides stability and strength to the veneer rolls, reinforces the finger joints and minimizes splintering, cracking and checking. The backer normally used is a standard weight non-woven fleece. The fleece can be doubly laminated when maximum strength and flexibility is called for, as in a profile wrapping grade quality specification.

Sanding

Sanding of the veneer rolls provides a quality surface finish ensuring that the face is smooth and consistent. Also, by sanding we achieve a veneer roll with a uniform thickness over the whole width of its surface along with consistency of thickness running the whole length of the veneer roll. Veneers are precision sanded within a tolerance factor of .02mm.

Pre-gluing

Our edgings, if required, are pre-glued with specially blended hot melt glues to give a firm bond to the board when reactivated. Note, in nature each tree is unique. The sliced (flitch) veneer from natural wood has its own distinctive characteristics determined by the growth cycle and environment of the tree. The form and shape of the growth rings, sap stains and vein lines along with the trunk knots and color combine to achieve a unique pattern in the veneer. This is the beauty of wood.

Features and Benefits

  • Fleece backers add strength to the veneer and the joints while giving the product maximum adhesion strength between the substrate and the wood veneer edgebanding.
  • The quality of finger joints make them nearly invisible.
  • Fine sanding makes our veneer edgebanding ready for finishing.
  • Available in more than 30 species.
  • Widths from 3/8" to 4" wide in most species. Wider widths may be available upon request.
  • Thickness tolerance - Touch Sanded is .025" +/- .003".
  • Thickness tolerance - Backed and Fine Sanded is .020" +/- .0025".
  • With hot melt glue line add .012" to .015" to the above thickness'.
  • Pre-glued rolls are 250 feet, unglued rolls are 500 feet in length.

Veneer edgebanding can be produced in a wide range of thickness. Total product thickness will vary based on backers used (if any), species of veneer, type of application the product is designed for and whether adhesive is applied to the back side. However, the following will be considered standard.

Regular Pre-Glued - R/G

  • Thickness, nominal .040 (1mm).
  • Continuous veneer rolls, expertly matched, finger-jointed and coated with a hot melt adhesive.
  • Touch sanded using 100 grit paper.
