Sheet Veneer Nothing matches the natural beauty of real wood. OLON Industries' veneer sheets combine the inherent natural beauty of fine veneer with the versatility and design features possible with backed, flexed sheets. Premium flat cut veneers are book matched, tenderized, pre-sanded and then laminated to various specialty backers. The backers act as a barrier which prevents the bond adhesive from penetrating to the wood surface while ensuring that finishing materials do not affect the glue bond. This lamination construction also virtually eliminates splitting, glue bleed-through and grain raise. Our veneer sheets will accept a wide variety of finishes including stains, oils, lacquers and varnishes. Features and Benefits - Consistent appearance and face matching from genuine wood, free of naturally formed defects.
- Available in 2 feet or 4 feet widths - 8 feet or 10 feet lengths.
- Backing of the veneer ensures a smooth, consistent, pliable sheet free of grain raise, glue bleed-through and splitting.
- Flexibility of the veneer sheets achieved by a tenderizing (flexing) process which relieves the natural stress found in wood. This allows for a greater range of applications without limiting the substrate material used or design shape of the project.
- Fine sanded to provide a uniform face surface ready for final finishing.
- Trimming of backed, flexed, sanded veneer sheets can be done with ordinary tools such as a utility knife or scissors.
- Available with four types of backers; 10 Mil and 20 Mil saturated paper backer, 30 Mil phenolic backer, pressure sensitive adhesive and 2 ply veneer with a veneer backer sheet eliminating black line.
- Available in single sheets, individually or bulk packaged.
- Available in more than 50 domestic and exotic species.

- Solvent-base Contact Cement
- Wooden Block or Veneer Roller
- Razor Blade
- Kraft Paper
- Household Iron
Surface Preparation A stable, smooth surface is essential to a successful installation. The surface to be covered with veneer should be cleaned of all dirt, oil or previous finishes. Depressions, indentations and raised areas should be filled and sanded smooth. For best results, contact adhesive and the veneer should be at room temperature (65º F or above) prior to use. Humidity levels should not exceed 50%. Application Apply a liberal coat of high quality solvent base contact adhesive to the surface and let dry (SEE ADHESIVE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING DRYING TIME). Inspect for evenness of adhesive. If coverage is not 100%, or if substrate is porous, apply a second coat of adhesive. NOTE: Wood veneer does not perform to the same standards as plastic laminates and requires COMPLETE and EVEN COVERAGE to resist bubbling. Next, place a piece of Kraft paper between the substrate and the veneer. Carefully slip the paper a few inches at a time from beneath the veneer. CAUTION: Be sure the veneer is in proper position before the paper is removed. The veneer cannot be repositioned after the adhesive has made contact. Using a wooden block or veneer roller, smooth out the veneer surface in the direction of the grain USING FIRM PRESSURE to obtain tight contact between the two glued surfaces. Continue this process until the entire sheet of veneer is applied to the substrate. Inspect within two hours for bubbles. If bubbles occur, use the options listed below: - 1. Deflate the air bubbles by slitting them in the direction of the grain and pressing toward the slit to remove the trapped air. It may be necessary to inject a small amount of adhesive beneath the surface of the veneer with a hypodermic needle, if the bubbles persist.
- 2. In a circular motion, work around the bubbled area with a warm, dry iron until the bubbles are firmly set. Place a protective sheet between the veneer and the iron to protect the surface.
Finishing Do not apply any finish for at least 24 to 36 hours after application. Before finishing, thoroughly inspect the installation for any bubbles, loose spots to areas that should be filled. The entire surface should be lightly sanded with the grain, using very fine sandpaper. Stains and oil finish must be used sparingly and wiped off immediately. To minimize the amount of penetration, a coat of sealer can be applied prior to the stain or oil finish. However, this will alter the intensity of the stain color due to the limited penetration. It is always recommended that a test panel of about 12" square, with at least one joint, be prepared and finished exactly as the veneer will be finished. The following are suggested finishing systems. - i. Varnish: Apply a coat of sealer. Allow drying for 24 hours. Sand thoroughly and then apply one or two coats of varnish.
- ii. Lacquer: Apply 2 or 3 coats of lacquer. The lacquer acts as a sealer.
- iii. Oil: Quick-drying oils only. If this finish is to be applied, allow additional time for adhesive to dry. Apply oil moderately with a cloth. DO NOT saturate the wood. Wipe dry quickly with a clean dry cloth. DO NOT USE LINSEED OIL.
- iv. Stains: Before stain is used, an application of a sealer is recommended. Then use standard wood stains, following the manufacturer's instructions.
