Polyester Edgebanding

Polyester edgebanding consists of two or more layers resin saturated face papers, backers and release papers which have been fused in a lamination process to produce a finished product.

Face Papers

A decorative face paper (solid, woodgrain or abstract print) matching popular high and low pressure laminates is impregnated with a polyester resin through a resin bath (saturation) process. The impregnation or saturation process produces a face paper that has a typical resin content range of 52% to 65%.

Backers

When polyester saturated face papers are laminated to resin pre-impregnated paper backer, the type of backer selected determines the type of product manufactured. Backers are used to add rigidity, strength and formability to the end product.

Surface Finish

The surface finish is achieved by means of a release paper which imparts the surface design or texture to the product in the lamination stage.

Lamination

The laminating process is achieved on a Hymmen continuous belt press with typical lamination specifications of 150 PSI and a temperature of 350 F. The pre-saturated face papers and backers are fused together as the polyester thermo set resins fully cure or cross-link in this process of high heat and pressure.

We also have the ability to produce an exact match for a specific custom laminate. Minimum runs may be required. Please contact your Sales Representative for further details.

Polyester edgebanding can be produced in a wide range of thicknesses. Various thickness may be required for various applications. However, the following thickness is considered standard.

  • A decorative face paper laminated to a kraft paper backer. The backer itself is commonly 0.008" to 0.010" (0.2mm to 0.25mm) in thickness and the end product is known under the moniker - 2 Ply Polyester.

  • Available in widths from 3/8" to 24".
  • Available in single roll quantities, 250ft pre-glued or 500ft unglued.
  • Polyester edgebanding offers such features as high heat resistance, pliability, formability and good internal bond strength for machineability.
  • May be pre-glued for heat bar or hot air application as polyester is not sensitive to heat.
  • Excellent for straight line, contour and soft form applications.
